What Is Halal Certification?

In Arabic, the word halal, also spelled as halaal, means permissible. Halal certification indicates that a production process and any ingredients are approved by Islamic consumption laws. There are several agencies around the globe that provide certification.

Halal practices are outlined by a uniform set of principles, which means that certification from any recognized and approved agency is acceptable for marketing. In the United States, the Islamic Services of America is one of the main authorities for Halal certification. It partners with a large number of companies that produce both non-consumable and consumable products.

What Does Halal Certification Cover?

Although most people have only heard of halal certification for foods, it spans many other products. If you are planning on manufacturing topical or consumable supplements to a market that includes people who observe Islamic laws, this certification is important. In addition to foods and beverages, these are some things that the certification covers:

  • Flavoring and coloring agents
  • Beauty products
  • Mineral products
  • Food and vitamin supplements
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Oils and cooking agents
  • Packaging
  • Production processes

Halal Certification Limitations

Today, a common concern with many American-based supplement sellers is ingredient quality. If you are planning on selling a non-GMO supplement, it is important to specify that as well. According to Islamic law scholars, GMO foods are acceptable to use if they are in alignment with the set of religious laws. Fortunately, our large supply chain gives us access to nearly any ingredient that is produced in compliance with this certification as well. If you have questions about other certifications that you want to use in addition to Halal, we will be happy to help.

How Does Halal Certification Work?

It can take several months to gain certification. A company’s preparedness and capacity often determine how long certification will take. If there are issues, the process takes longer. These are the main steps that manufacturers can expect.

Inquiry and Application

After a company submits an inquiry to a regulating agency, the agency sends out information and an application. On the application, a company must provide its contact information, location and other details. Supplemental information is also required for the agency to determine if the products and processes may be compliant. These are some examples of information that must be submitted:

  • Product lists
  • Full ingredient lists
  • Supplier information
  • Production flowcharts

Agreement and Certification Outline

Once the information is received, the agency reviews it. If the facility has any disqualifying factors, the agency will notify the petitioning company. An agreement is drafted if the application is accepted. The petitioning manufacturer receives a compliance overview and an outline of what to expect during the rest of the process. If the manufacturer agrees to the terms and signs the contract, the process continues with the next steps.

Review and Analysis

At this point, the agency conducts a more in-depth review. These are some of the steps that take place:

  • Ingredient analysis
  • Supplier analysis
  • Production analysis

If the agency requires clarification about ingredients or suppliers, it will contact the petitioning company. During this phase of the process, the agency ensures that ingredients are permissible. It also verifies statuses of any listed suppliers.

Audit Checklist and Inspection

Before the facility inspection, the petitioning company receives a pre-audit checklist. This will help ensure that everything is ready for inspection. The checklist is returned to the agency before the inspection date arrives. When the audit is conducted, a representative from the certifying agency visits to ensure compliance in all outlined areas. The audit may take several hours.

Invoices and Certification

Once the audit is complete, invoices are sent that reflect the following:

  • Product reviews
  • Product certifications
  • Facility certifications

After this, certification is granted and is good for one year.

Maintaining Certification

Certifying agencies may conduct inspections of facilities when they deem necessary. The frequency of visits may depend on several factors, which can include:

  • Customer complaints
  • Product rejections
  • Initial auditor’s recommendations

Re-certification is an annual process. To maintain certification, a qualifying company must submit an annual form and pay a certification fee. If the company passes subsequent halal audits and submits its documentation and fee payment on time, renewal is granted for another year.

How Certifying Agencies Handle Problems

Certification may be revoked if a company has significant compliance failures during an audit. These are some potential grounds for revocation of a certificate:

Major sanitation issues
Haram ingredients
Multiple rejections or compliance issues

Haram is an Arabic word that means prohibited. If an ingredient is haram, it specifically goes against religious laws. For example, any product that contains pork or pork byproducts is considered haram in Islamic law.

To avoid any compliance issues with regulating agencies, our manufacturing facilities have strict policies in place to maintain agreeable GMPs. Additionally, employees who work on production lines for this certification are thoroughly trained to uphold the highest compliance standards.

Why Halal Certification Is Important

Like other religious certifications, this mark shows customers that their purchase was prepared with high standards. These benefits speak to customers who are not part of the religion as well. Here are some other important benefits to consider:

  • Halal certification assures customers of proper hygienic and preparatory steps.
  • Halal certification helps expand your potential market.
  • Halal certification can give you the ability to grow your brand and market it in other countries.

If you are planning on having a supplement manufactured in the United States and exported to a country with a population that is predominantly Muslim, it is important to have this certification. In addition to appealing to customers, it may make the exportation process easier to some countries.

We just completed a very large Homeopathic tablet order that required involvement from 4 different facilities. There was nobody else in the country that was willing to help us that we called until we found superior. First shipment came last week and we couldn’t be happier or more impressed with the team. Thank you Justine, Phil, Stephenie you are the best!

I was choosing between two companies to create a formulation, and it came down to their level of service, expertise and confidence in their ability to execute. After speaking to Phil, their lead guy who knows all things supplements and is very easy to communicate with, was enthusiastic and helped to create a strategy to see my vision through. The last thing you want is a transactional relationship in this industry, so whether you’re a first timer or a veteran, these guys know how to add value no matter what level you’re at. Highly recommend Superior and their team to get the job done.

When they say “Superior” they aren’t kidding. Of over 100 companies on our NSF list that we called, and over 20 that we talked to, Superior was the ONLY one that consistently answered their phones, worked incredibly diligently to problem solve and R&D an incredibly complex patented proprietary product, and consistently was two or three steps ahead of us, the landscape and their competitors. Looking forward to a long relationship Superior!
★★★★★
We’ve been using Superior for over 5 years. We came to them because our last manufacturer stopped making the capsule size I needed. I looked everywhere for a replacement. Luckily, I found Superior. They quoted me a fair price and sourced a hard to find ingredient quickly. In the 5 years we’ve had them make our product, which is a custom formulation, they have never delivered late once. Quality control is very high and I get constant updates from Phil our point person while it is being manufactured. I cannot recommend them enough.
★★★★★
Our previous manufacturer was 3 months late on a production and barely spoke with us. We have run many runs with Superior and as with all manufacturing, there was an order that was a little late because of poor crop growth. Not only did they warn us ahead of time they showed us the list of suppliers they were calling day and night to try to find replacement material. Best company ever!

Jake, Justine and Phil are just a few of the team members we have had the pleasure of working with at Superior. As a marketing agency working in the supplement industry, we work with many suppliers on behalf of our clients. I especially appreciate Superior Supplements Manufacturing because of their dedication to customer relationships. They go to extreme measures to ensure quality ingredients, fair pricing and great turn around times. The staff is also extremely knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this team.
